The Fall 2012 Menswear shows strongly reinforced the sentiment, “it’s a man’s world.” The latest shows brought about the resurgence of the classically tailored man. The result of this revitalization is a beautiful mixture of futuristic rock ‘n roll and Victorian gentleman. Visualize The Picture of Dorian Grey if Mr. Grey lived in 3028 and had a leather fetish. Designers did not re-invent the suit; they simply made it cool again.
If you know me, you know I literally worship the ground that Christopher Bailey walks on. The designer’s latest collection for Burberry Prorsum is just as exciting as his first. Bailey has literally brought Burberry back from the dead since his arrival at the label in 2001, and his appointment as chief creative director at the label in 2009 made me leap with joy. Bailey’s designs really reflect the British gentleman. His clothes are beautifully tailored and are just plain cool. Lots of grey mixed with jewel tones and leather make me one very happy person.
Yves Saint Laurent has always oozed sort of a masculine sexiness – in both the menswear and women’s collections – and this season is no different. Stefano Pilati has given the world another flawless menswear collection. I can only imagine the sumptuousness of the leather t-shirts, and the motorcycle coat is to die for. Well done Mr. Pilati, well done.
Nicola Formichetti’s third menswear collection for Mugler redeemed his spring collection – the acid wash denim was tacky and the collection was kind of all over the place. This collection was far from tacky. A beautiful blend of sci-fi and militaristic tailoring, Formichetti turned to unconventional materials like neoprene and rubber to bring his masterpieces to life. Oh, and can I have one of those capes, please? Thanks!
Let me be the first to say, I am not typically a fan of Valentino. That is, I have not been a fan of Valentino under the creative direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli (can Mr. Valentino please come back?!). That being said, the Fall 2012 menswear collection is MAJOR, which is really the only word to describe it. Perfect tailoring, impeccable fabric choices…everything is just flawless. I need every piece in this collection and I need it now. I mean, an emerald leather sport coat, c’mon…what more could one ask for in life?
