Let me know what YOU think….what are you going to snag before the summer merchandise is gone??

Who: My wonderful friend David with his fashionable friends Kirby, Mary Kathryn, Helena, & Stephanie

What: First off my friend David, who has interned in NYC with the likes of Vogue, Marc Jacobs & most recently Ralph Lauren, always looks prepster chic with an added edge (aka he has sported a vibrant green leather Marc by Marc Jacobs hoodie, love!).  But throw in a variety pack of well dressed Southern girls & it’s hard not to take a second look!  Love Kirby’s British, Kate Moss meets grunge style contrasted with Mary Kathryn’s girly girl ethnic print tunic dress & wedges & then finally Stephanie & Helena’s classic & chic ensembles….c’est fabuleux!

Where: At the VIP Party celebrating the opening of 32 degrees A Yogurt Bar at The Summit in Birmingham, AL..it was quite delicious by the way!  Helps with my yogurt cravins’ after living in NYC & being spoiled by yogurt bars located on every other block!

Last Saturday night I braved the Alabama heat & humidity at Birmingham’s historical landmark, Sloss Furnaces, all for the sake of the precious Zooey Deschanel & her bubbly happy, pop folk music.  The relatively new project, She & Him consisting of Zooey & Matt Ward began in 2008….but long before that we all knew that girl could sing thanks to her short singing stint in the hilarious movie Elf.

Not only is Zooey’s dreamy voice absolutely melodic & filled with joy, but her fashion sense is right on cue too!  At the concert Saturday night she & her hippie-esque back-up singers were dressed in the most precious vintage dresses complete with braided hair & doo-wop updos….all in all inspiring me to explore her style further, enjoy!

I proudly toted my Nikon D3000 into the She & Him show…but unfortunately no cameras were allowed :(  LAME especially because there were SO many cute, well dressed, Zooey look-alikes!  I was lucky enough to snag a (very poor quality) iPhone photo of my favorite ensemble of the evening.

SOUTHERN FEMME OF THE WEEK:

Who: Sarah from Memphis (her gold broach has an S engraved on it, so fab)

What: Her vintage lace cap-sleeve sheath dress perfectly belted was quite reminiscent of Zooey’s music & style.  Sara opted for the quite on trend ‘masculine meets feminine’ look, pairing black lace up oxfords with a magenta vintage 1950’s cocktail hat pinned to the back of her head…c’est magnifique!

A few years back I discovered the magnifique concept boutique, Colette, located on the designer lined Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore in Paris.  Seeing the uniquely selected fashion items + the latest in music + the newest technology + a mix of food & drinks I was immediately & forever sold on the idea.  It is the ultimate & most perfect way to shop.  The merchandise & visuals are constantly evolving, changing, growing in these stores, making shopping forever exciting & quite the learning experience!  With boutiques, chain stores, dept. stores everywhere…. concept boutiques are the fabulous rarity.  And that being said, for consumers it is also about indulging in individualistic & quality pieces over fast fashion.  Perhaps the trend is moving from stores like H&M, Topshop & Zara to luxurious & unique stores like Colette, Merci, & Grand Opening.

Concept boutiques are being written up on both trendy blogs & fashion newspapers alike…From the ‘Phospene Fashion’ blog:

“It’s all about quality over quantity, no fuss simplicity and practicality.  Which is why I’m loving these  Marlow & Sons leather pouches and bags–there’s nothing frilly about them, just quality leather in pure functional form adorned with the simplest hardware. Marlow & Sons is based out of Brooklyn, NY and is actually a cafe / restaurant. There’s something very fascinating about food establishments serving up design and fashion. This brings to mind the (unfortunately, now-defunct) Achilles Project in Boston which delivered pasture raised veal carpaccio, potato gnocchi, champagne, Rag & Bone, MM6 and Surface to Air all under one roof. It was insane, perhaps too ambitious a concept, but the idea was beyond awesome. I want a Marlow & Sons bag and bring back the Achilles Project!”

From Women’s Wear Daily, June 26th 2010:

“THE GREAT EXCHANGE: Pop-ups are so last season. The next hip retail concept could be the swap shop. Paris boutique Colette and London’s KK Outlet, a retail space and gallery run by communications agency and publisher KesselsKramer, will showcase a selection of each other’s products from July 5 to 31. KesselsKramer is known for quirky books such as “The Worst Hotel in the World,” about the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel in Amsterdam.”

Here’s an amazing concentrated list of concept boutiques around the world….watch them grow!

I recently got into the AMC TV show, Mad Men. And what’s not to love…the dynamic characters, the twisted plot, and OF COURSE THE CLOTHES.  Joan (aka Christina Hendricks) in her curve hugging pencil skirts, cardigans & kitten heel pumps and then Betty (aka January Jones) in her demure satin floral print dresses make me crave the latest Louis Vuitton collection…

Models Bar Refaeli, Elle Macpherson, and Laetitia Casta model the ‘Mad Men’-esque clothing at the Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 show. Marc Jacobs chose ‘curvy’ models to exhibit his cinched waist looks reminiscent of late ’50s & early ’60s fashion.  Not only is this clothing trend exploding but also the more hourglass body type seems to be coming back en vogue.  C’est magnifique!!

Growing up watching my tres chic great-grandmother dress to the nines, it is no wonder when I came across this image of these antique perfume bottles I was immediately reminded of her.  She was always decked out in chic, ladylike suits, A-line cinched waist dresses, pencil skirts, & kitten heel pumps.  I have been so lucky as to inherit a Lanvin scarf, Givenchy earrings & many dainty clutches from Pappy.

I stumbled upon this image while checking out a fashion blog recently. I love the contrast of the international meets domestic, ladylike chic of Hiroko, Cardin’s famous Japanese model, in a ruffled dress…

Speaking of fashion blogs, as I mention every other blog post haha, I adore Garance Dore, photographer, fashion illustrator & blogger ‘extrordinaire’!  This photo from her blog is the perfect example of Mad Men chic translated into a modern world. Classic Wayfarers + Red Lips + Cinched Waist Dress = Feminine Perfection!

Take a peak into the July issue of Vogue. The main fashion feature is a storyline between Natalia Vodianova and Ewan McGregor showcasing the most divinely fabulous 50’s glam…

Even the First Lady has embraced this emerging trend. I love her collection of Jason Wu and Thakoon floral print classic dresses, J.Crew pencil skirts & fitted cardigans, and of course her wide variety of kitten heel pumps.  An important detail of this feminine trend is the ‘Return to Ladylike Kitten Heels’ (read more in this article from Glass Magazine).

And while I adore, adore, adore the feminine, curve hugging clothing that is so on trend right now, kitten heels are not for me.  I’d actually prefer a sleek, 4 inch platform Louboutin pump.  But this trend is so very perfect for many of my fabulous professional suit wearing friends & Style Coaching clients.

Who: Karen Harris, director of Natural Glam Makeup

What: My fabulous friend Karen is dressed in the quintessential Southern summer outfit, a floral sundress!  The colorful, petite floral print is perfectly paired with yellow feminine flats, a yellow clutch, & bangles & oversize earrings to match.

Where: The adorable Crestwood Coffee Company…must pop by for their delicious, fresh food & drinks!

On a recent wedding shopping trip to Atlanta for my mom (who is getting married in less than a month!) I discovered amidst the heap of sale shoes at Neimans these delightfully bad ass Elizabeth & James wedges.  The ‘Swoon’ wedge is made of black woven leather with a skinny wedge heel & a back prominent zipper.  They are the perfect way to update my summer & even fall wardrobe.  They can be worn with everything this summer from sundresses, shorts + tee + blazer, or as pictured here with a full ’50s style skirt (from Anthropologie) + frilly tee (Marc by Marc Jacobs from Saks) + oversize patent clutch (vintage).  Then for fall, I will definitely be layering them with a pair of ribbed opaque tights.

Loooooving my black stingray skin cuff too (did you know stingray is actually called shagreen?!)

Where: Enjoying croissants at Continental Bakery in English Village

Favorite Upcoming Fall Trend: After seeing the Anna Sui Fall 2010 show this past February, Belinda fell in love with the playful textiles & colors.  She especially adored the light blues & purples, 2 important colors for fall.

Get Festive!

‘Get Festive’ Collage by Rachel Staples-fabulous Southern Femme intern!

With all the summer music festivals, like Bonnaroo & Glastonbury, it’s important to dress ‘festival appropriate’ aka comfortable & ready for the heat.  And while these festivals are supposed to be all about the music, we all know deep down that it is a bit of a fashion show too!

While festivals do have their own trends & often crazy statements (see links below), they also stick to the summer must haves like earth tones, nature inspired jewelry, pops of bright colors & since you don’t want to layer your clothes leave that to your jewelry.

Coachella

Jetting from Paul McCartney to MIA, wear your eclectic best thrift & vintage finds paired with some rainbow hued Ray Ban-esque sunglasses.

Bonnaroo

This fashion style definitely mirrors the eclectic mix of bands (i.e. Black Keys & Neil Young) at the Tennessee based festival.  When you head to the country make sure to pack your earth mother maxi dress, tie dye tees, and floral romper.

Austin City Limits

Put on your best cowboy boots, cutoff denim, fringe vest, Alexander Wang tee and top it off with a fishtail braid when you hit up Kings of Leon, Girl Talk and Phoenix in Zilker Park.

Glastonbury

Channel your inner Kate Moss at this English countryside festival.  Think grunge chic with hints of plaid & day-glo…oh and definitely don’t forget your Hunter wellies!

Doing my monthly first ‘read’ through the May issue of InStyle Magazine (this consists of ooohing & ahhhing over the fashion spreads & seeing if there are any articles worth reading), I stumbled upon a article called ‘Mom’s Need Style Too! (Right?!)’.  Well I am not a mom & don’t plan on being one anytime soon BUT I have fabulous style coaching clients that are moms so I thought, what the hell I’ll take a look…And thank goodness I did!  WOW.  This article is from a mom’s point of view on what I preach, preach, preach to my clients & readers alike: you may be busy but take time for yourself!  You cannot be supermom, superwife, superbusiness woman without first taking care of yourself.  And a large part of that is your appearance, aka your wardrobe.  This is not meant to be shallow or superficial but just the truth, when you look great, you feel great & when you feel great (confidence y’all!), you genuinely want to look great!  Remember that feeling on the first day of school when you had your new outfit & you felt ready to take on the world (or at least 7th grade)…channel that ladies every day, no matter what the occasion, no matter what your job, age, style or body type.  Ok I’ll get off my soapbox & let y’all read on…(sorry for the chopped up article, wanted to make sure y’all could read every.single.word)
